CHAPTER NINE

I arrived back at Gladstone just before lunch. Peter and Grams had enjoyed a nice little breakfast together, and he was eagerly awaiting my return so he could escape her intense questioning.

“Hey!” he shouted nervously, just a little too loudly when I walked in. “It’s about time you got back. We’ve been waiting for you for hours.”

I smiled apologetically. “I’m so sorry, Peter. The visit took a lot longer than I had expected.”

“It’s okay.” He smiled. “You’re here now. What are we going to do today?”

“I’m afraid I have to apologize again. I have to change and get down to the museum so I can start the castle tour.”

Peter slapped his hand to his forehead. “Oh, I forgot about that. You’re going to do a castle tour today.”

“Yep. But you can stay here with Grams if you like. You’re gonna kind of make me nervous anyway.”

A slow grin spread across his face, and I immediately regretted my comment.

“In that case,” he teased, “I’ll be happy to join you.”

I thought I saw a slight glint of mischievousness in his eye, but I couldn’t be sure. I darted up the stairs before he had a chance to make a comment. This was going to be a rough day to get through.
